Fanfare for the Commonplace

A commonplace is like a gluebook, which is like a scrapbook, which is like a tumblelog. A place to stick things so you can look at them later.

An article about the new Dictionary of American Regional English by Simon Winchester.

I made this for Suzie.

This is the first drawing I’ve completed since I posted the previous ones here. It turns out knowing you will post something on the internet makes you a lot more self conscious. I finally drew this because it was the simplest thing I could think of.

This is a drawing of a bunny I made from felted wool, plus a sky and a balloon. I like that it looks like it has an expression on its face. Other than that, it was simple.

This is a recognizable panda only because I used a photo and sort of copied the outlines of a panda and then filled it in. I am really going to have to read “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.”

I was thinking about our local toy store, the Inland Octopus, and its horrible sign, and I figured I could do something that ugly on the theme of octopuses, and I was right.

01-17-12

I was watching this horrible BBC costume drama about George Sand and doodling.

01-09-12

Yeah, this is just a photo that I scribbled on. And not a very good photo, either, since, among other reasons, I took it with my iPod touch.

Another tree, this one with leaves that look like feathers! Also note the tasteful use of the spray paint.

01-06-12

Yes, this is one ugly tree. I discovered the spray paint in Sketchbook. But I did my drawing.

I was listening to David Tennant narrate The Pied Piper of Hamelin and since I didn’t have any better ideas for the day, decided to draw him, because I wondered what a coat that was red and yellow might look like. I think I used Sketchbook to draw this.

The thing I liked best about this was the little red flowers in the left-hand corner.

For the new year I decided I wanted to draw and paint. I have no talent with either, but I was thinking how fun it was, as a child, to just draw, and I wanted to do that again. I did this in an iPad program called Art Rage. You get a lot of the fun of painting, and none of the mess. As you can see, I was really enjoying the no-mess aspect.

I’m going to put the paintings up here, not because I think they are good, but because they aren’t. So other people might decide they can do something they aren’t good at too.
